Jardin Botánico Soledad was founded in 1901 for scientific research in planting sugarcane. In 1919 it became a botanical garden, which is operated today by the Cuban Academy of Sciences. There is a display of palm, bamboo and ficus species next to a unique collection of cacti, orchids and sweet-water algae. A small exhibition documents the history of the garden which still serves to science today.
In a surrounding of lush vegetation, at 500 meters elevation in the Guamuhaya mountains of the Sierra del Escambray, El Nicho is very impressive with its singular flora and fauna. The area invites to hike the well-prepared trails and swim in the pools and cascades, visit the caves and finally enjoy a traditional criollo meal.
Trinidad - like the historical center of Havana - was declared world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. The city was founded by the Spanish among the first in Cuba at the beginning of the 16th century. With its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture Trinidad today is the oldest and best-preserved town of Cuba with numerous museums and churches well worth visiting.
This spa area at an elevation of 770 meters was begun in 1954 to cure tuberculosis and today again is an important destination for "health tourism" and many special treatments. The region receives the highest precipitation of Cuba, thus making a multitude of rain-forest plants flourish and giving home to a unique animal population. One of the most popular tours leads along a rock face to the Caburní cascades or across eucalyptus and pine forests to the summits of the Sierra del Escambray.
The Zapata peninsula national park lies west of Cienfuegos in the vicinity of the infamous "Bay of Pigs" (Playa Girón). The landscape is shaped by lagoons where the endangered manatis still live and famed as a birder's paradise. In this area of canals, mangrove forests and palms lies Lago del Tesoro, where the native Taínos are said to have hidden their treasures from the Spaniards. The tourism development of Guamá invites to a hotel which is the reproduction of an Indian village, a crocodile farm and the beaches of Playa Girón, where a museum keeps the memory of the 1961 victory against a US-supported invasion attempt alive.
The world-famous seaside avenue Malecón, the flair of the lanes and squares of the historical city center La Habana Vieja, a mojíto or daiquirí in Hemingway's favorite bars, the visit of a cigar factory or the ride in a biciycle-taxi or a 1950s "Chevy" – a one-day visit to the capital of the Caribbean could be far too short. Therefore we recommend to organize your arrival or departure accordingly. For this like all other individual destinations we are glad to help you organize an according travel arrangement.
